Joseph Kihara is a strategy and infrastructure advisory professional with experience across infrastructure finance, energy transition, corporate strategy, and financial modelling. He currently works at Africa International Advisors (AIA), where he has led and supported engagements across transport, energy, infrastructure, and industrial sectors in Southern and East Africa.
Joseph holds a Master’s degree in Finance and Investments from Wits Business School and an Honours degree in Actuarial Science. His professional experience spans infrastructure financing, market and demand modelling, due diligence, strategy formulation, operating model design, and transaction support. He has worked extensively on projects involving infrastructure planning, energy security, transport sector development, and institutional strategy.
His recent work includes advising government on the development of business cases and institutional frameworks aimed at scaling infrastructure finance through blended and concessional funding mechanisms. He has also contributed to projects involving virtual pipeline infrastructure for CNG and mini-LNG utilisation in the transport sector, renewable energy strategy development, gas-to-power advisory, corporate and turnaround strategy, infrastructure-related financial modelling, and market entry strategy support within the energy sector.
Joseph’s work has included project leadership, stakeholder engagement, transport and energy demand modelling, financial modelling oversight, turnaround strategy formulation, and strategic advisory support. His experience combines strategic thinking with execution-focused delivery across both public and private sector environments.
Prior to consulting, Joseph worked in actuarial and financial analysis roles at Old Mutual, where he was involved in long-term liability valuation support, strategic financial projections, and business analytics across Eastern and Central Africa. He also has entrepreneurial and physical commodity trading experience through Kifaru Capital, where he has been involved in deal advisory, financial strategy, and metals and minerals trading within the SADC region.
Joseph is also a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, having completed the foundation’s leadership development programme focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, reconciliation, and impact-driven public value creation.
